Canadensys Aerospace leverages space technology into commercial exports

Oct 23, 2024

[Toronto, 23 October 2024] – Canadensys Aerospace has shipped the final vehicle in an order for RAPTOR  unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) from a European defense customer. The Canadensys RAPTOR is a robust, electric drive, six-wheeled vehicle that is capable of extended autonomous operation through challenging urban and off-road terrains.  The RAPTOR has a 2,700 kg gross vehicle weight, which includes a 1,000 kg payload capacity to enable a wide range of missions and applications.

Canadensys also produces the HAWC optionally-manned vehicle (OMV), which shares a common base platform with RAPTOR, but which includes crew seats and an operator control station to allow the vehicle to be driven by humans.  Previous orders have seen HAWC and RAPTOR vehicles exported to the other customers in the US and Europe.

Both of these terrestrial robotic vehicles have been spun-off using technologies and design methodologies from the company’s extensive lunar vehicle development program.  Over the past decade, Canadensys has developed robotic lunar vehicles in a range of sizes for both government and commercial customers.

David Tunney, Director of Program Formulation at Canadensys Aerospace, stated that “Unmanned ground vehicles, or UGV’s, are increasingly being used around the world in security, defense, and industrial applications, such as mining and forestry. Our HAWC and RAPTOR vehicles, together with our smaller terrestrial robots, allow us to leverage the advanced systems that we have developed for our lunar vehicles to address the challenges here on Earth.”

President & CEO, Christian Sallaberger, added “Not only have we spun-off our lunar vehicle technologies into our terrestrial RAPTOR and HAWC vehicles, but we are excited to now have things come full circle, with our extensive experience designing and building these large commercial robotic vehicles being used in our development of 1,000kg+ lunar robotic vehicles.”
